Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

• Critically evaluate scientific data. This includes self generated, peer generated data and published literature.
• Describe the different forms of metabolism that microorganisms can employ and link these to their ability to colonise all environments.
• Demonstrate effective written and verbal scientific communication skills.
• Understand and explain the physiology of different microorganisms, with emphasis on how this allows them to survive in diverse environments.
• Describe in detail the main groups of microorganisms and their diversity.

Subject Specific Practical Skills

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

• Develop practical skills in microbiological techniques.
• Test hypotheses in microbiology via experimental design, analyse results and discuss outcomes in the light of the current body of knowledge (e.g. published literature).
