Module overview

Whether designing bridges, vehicles, medical devices or aerospace structures, engineers need to understand how forces, motion and materials influence the performance of engineering systems. This module introduces the core principles of mechanics, structures and materials that form the foundation of every engineering discipline. You will explore how forces act on engineering structures, how objects move, and how different materials respond to loading and deformation. Through the study of statics, dynamics and materials, you will develop the analytical and problem-solving skills needed to understand and predict the behaviour of engineering components under a wide range of operating conditions. By the end of the module, you will have developed the engineering judgement and mathematical techniques needed to analyse forces, motion and material behaviour with confidence. These fundamental skills provide the platform for advanced study across mechanical, civil, aerospace, biomedical and many other engineering disciplines.
