Module overview

Every effort to control noise and vibration is ultimately judged by people. A quieter road, a smoother train, a well designed building all succeed or fail according to how those who experience them respond, so the engineer must understand and anticipate that human reaction. This module examines how people respond to sound and vibration in their environment, and how those environmental stimuli are measured and assessed. You will study the main effects of noise and vibration on people and learn to identify the variables that shape their responses, then combine those variables to make quantitative predictions of how a given environment will be judged. You will work with the standards and regulations that provide a framework for objective evaluation, understanding both how to apply them and why they take the form they do. You will also examine alternative approaches to assessment, developing the judgement to recognise when a particular case calls for a different method. By the end of the module, you will be able to measure and assess environmental noise and vibration, predict human responses to them, and apply the relevant standards with a clear understanding of their basis and limitations. These skills are central to professional practice in noise and vibration control, environmental consultancy and regulation, and they equip you to design and evaluate solutions that work for the people who ultimately live with them.
