Learning Outcomes

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

• Apply social science principles, method and knowledge to common medical practice relevant to the topics studied
• Discuss biological, psychological and sociological concepts of health, illness and disease, as applied to common mental health conditions, ageing, and end of life.
• Apply the principles, method and knowledge of population health and the improvement of health and health care to common medical practice relevant to the topics studied
• Apply psychological principles, method and knowledge to common medical practice relevant to the topics studied
• Apply biomedical scientific principles, method and knowledge to common medical practice relevant to the topics studied (biomedical science including anatomy, biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, immunology, metabolism, nutrition, pathology, pharmacology and physiology)
• Discuss ethical and legal issues in a variety of clinical contexts and from a variety of different perspectives

Learning will be structured around a series of clinical topic weeks, which are used to provide a framework for educational activities and to provide an example of the medical practice context to which the knowledge and understanding apply. The order of clinical topic weeks has been designed to be mostly systems-based whilst also allowing for an integrated and spiral curriculum in which more detailed clinical knowledge will be acquired during years 3-5. The clinical topics used to frame learning within the AK8 module will be: 1. Depression 2. Functional neurological disorder 3. Substance addiction 4. Ageing and dementia 5. End of life Collaborative teaching will be provided by specialists in the following subjects: Anatomy, communications, genetics, haematology, histology, immunology, infection, law and ethics, metabolism, microbiology, nutrition, oncology, pathology, clinical pharmacology and therapeutics, physiology, PPD, psychology, population and planetary health, radiology, research as applied to medicine, sociology. For each of the clinical topics detailed learning outcomes are provided to guide students in the biomedical, social, psychological, ethical, legal and population health knowledge and understanding that are applied to each topic. These are available along with resources to support the learning within the Blackboard module pages.
