Module overview

This second-year module continues to develop the essential concepts of aerospace structures and their mechanical behaviour, building on the fundamentals established in the first-year courses on Aerospace materials and Statics & dynamics. This module deals with the structural performance for complex, yet practically-relevant aerospace engineering components and systems under bending, torsion, shear and buckling effects. Structural elements will be considered beyond one-dimensional beam-like elements, such as mechanics of plates and laminated composite structures. Failure and fatigue analyses will be covered for structures made of brittle and ductile aerospace structural components. The students will further be introduced to the emerging concepts of structural health monitoring and non-destructive testing and evaluation. The topics covered in this module will strengthen the students’ understanding of the interplay among mechanics, materials and structures for aircraft and spacecraft structural designs, which are offered as third year modules.
