Module overview

Ship design requires engineers to balance technical performance, safety, environmental responsibility and commercial viability. From cargo vessels and passenger ships to specialised offshore vessels, successful designs must meet both operational requirements and wider economic and sustainability objectives. In this module, you will learn how engineering decisions influence the technical and commercial success of a vessel. You will apply design principles to develop a preliminary ship design, translating operational requirements into engineering solutions and producing a general arrangement drawing. Along the way, you will develop skills in design synthesis, engineering judgement, economic assessment and the evaluation of safety and sustainability considerations. By the end of the module, you will have gained practical experience of the early stages of ship design and an appreciation of the trade-offs involved in developing maritime systems. These skills provide an important bridge between engineering fundamentals and more advanced design-focused modules and support future careers in naval architecture and maritime engineering.
