Module overview

Safe and efficient operation of marine vehicles depends on their ability to manoeuvre predictably and respond effectively to control inputs. From conventional ships to autonomous maritime systems, manoeuvring and control are increasingly important aspects of modern vessel design and operation. In this module, you will develop an understanding of the principles that govern marine vehicle motion and control. You will explore how hydrodynamic forces influence manoeuvring performance and how control system theory can be applied to vessels operating on and below the water surface. Through analytical modelling and simulation-based activities, you will learn how engineers predict and improve vessel behaviour in a range of operating scenarios. By the end of the module, you will be able to evaluate manoeuvring performance and apply control concepts to marine vehicle systems. The knowledge developed will support further study in autonomy, maritime robotics, vessel performance and advanced marine systems engineering.
