Module overview

The interaction between vessels, structures and waves governs many of the challenges faced in naval architecture and ocean engineering. Predicting how marine systems respond to their fluid environment is essential for ensuring safety, performance and operational effectiveness. In this module, you will extend your understanding of fluid mechanics to analyse wave-induced loads and motions experienced by ships and offshore structures. You will develop mathematical, computational and engineering modelling skills to investigate topics such as added mass, roll behaviour and seakeeping performance. Through numerical analysis and experimental investigations, you will explore how hydrodynamic theory is applied to real vessels operating in realistic sea conditions. By the end of the module, you will be able to evaluate the hydrodynamic performance of marine systems and interpret their response to environmental loading. These capabilities form an important part of advanced naval architecture and support careers in ship design, offshore engineering and maritime consultancy.
