Module overview

Sound rarely travels through open space unobstructed. In the real world it moves along ducts, fills rooms and reflects off barriers, and understanding these situations is what turns basic acoustic theory into practical engineering. This module takes the fundamentals of sound generation and propagation you met earlier and develops them further, so you can apply them to the systems that matter most in professional practice. You will revisit the core concepts of sound fields in greater depth and extend them to a range of practically important cases, including the propagation of sound in ducts, the behaviour of sound within rooms, and the effect of barriers on transmission. In doing so, you will strengthen the analytical skills to model realistic acoustic problems and understand why these systems behave as they do, rather than relying on results alone. By the end of the module, you will be able to analyse and predict sound behaviour in ducts, rooms and around barriers, and apply acoustic theory with confidence to practical problems. This deeper command of physical acoustics is essential preparation for the specialist modules that follow, from noise control and building acoustics to audio and environmental engineering, and for professional work across the field.
