Module overview

Providing clean, secure and sustainable energy is one of the greatest engineering challenges of the twenty-first century. This module explores the scientific principles and engineering technologies that underpin the transition to low-carbon energy systems, developing the knowledge needed to evaluate future energy solutions. You will investigate global energy resources, patterns of energy demand and the technologies used for sustainable power generation, developing a broad understanding of how engineering can support the transition to a more sustainable future. Through analytical problem-solving and engineering modelling, you will explore the physical principles that govern energy conversion while considering the technical, environmental and societal challenges associated with modern energy systems. Throughout the module, emphasis is placed on developing engineering judgement through the application of fundamental theory to real-world energy problems. By the end of the module, you will be able to evaluate sustainable energy technologies using sound engineering principles, preparing you to contribute to the design and development of future energy systems.
