Module overview

The movement of water around ships, offshore structures and marine energy devices influences their performance, safety and efficiency. Hydrodynamics provides the foundation for understanding these interactions and is essential to the design of everything from commercial vessels and high-performance craft to offshore renewable energy systems. In this module, you will develop a fundamental understanding of how fluids behave and how engineers analyse flow around marine systems. You will learn how mathematical and physical models are used to predict fluid motion, forces and flow behaviour, gaining insight into both idealised and real-fluid effects. Through laboratory experiments and analytical problem-solving, you will connect theoretical principles with practical observations, developing skills in experimentation, data analysis and engineering interpretation. You will also begin to appreciate how hydrodynamic phenomena influence the design and operation of maritime systems. By the end of the module, you will be able to apply hydrodynamic principles to a range of engineering problems and evaluate fluid behaviour using analytical and experimental techniques. The knowledge and practical skills developed will provide a vital foundation for later study in ship resistance, propulsion, marine hydrodynamics, offshore engineering and advanced maritime system design.
