Module overview

From reducing friction in engines to improving corrosion resistance in offshore structures, surface engineering plays a critical role in enhancing reliability, efficiency and durability. The performance and lifetime of many engineering components are determined not by the bulk material, but by the properties of their surfaces. This module explores the principles and applications of modern surface engineering technologies. You will investigate how surface treatments, coatings and material modifications are used to improve wear resistance, reduce friction and protect components from oxidation and corrosion. Alongside the scientific principles underpinning surface engineering, you will examine the practical selection of surface technologies, considering both engineering performance and economic factors. Industrial case studies will demonstrate how these techniques are applied across a wide range of engineering sectors to improve product performance and extend service life. By the end of the module, you will be able to evaluate and select appropriate surface engineering solutions for demanding engineering applications, developing specialist knowledge that supports advanced materials design, tribology and structural integrity engineering.
