Module overview

Composite materials make modern engineering possible, enabling lighter, stronger and more efficient structures in aerospace, automotive, renewable energy and sporting applications. In this module, you will learn how fibre-reinforced composites behave, how their structure affects performance, and how engineers design with them confidently and safely. You will explore the mechanics of fibre-reinforced polymer composites and learn how to model, analyse and predict the behaviour of composite laminates under complex loading conditions. You will study reduced lamina models, classical laminate theory, structural analysis, damage mechanisms and failure prediction, developing the analytical tools needed to understand deformation and structural performance. You will also take part in laboratory activities that introduce composite manufacturing, mechanical testing and material characterisation, helping you connect theory with real engineering behaviour. By the end of the module, you will be able to analyse and evaluate composite structures with greater confidence, applying advanced materials knowledge to real design challenges across aerospace, automotive, maritime and renewable energy sectors.
