Module overview
Understanding the internal structure of materials is essential for explaining why engineering components succeed or fail. This module introduces the advanced experimental techniques that engineers use to investigate material microstructures, surfaces and defects, providing the evidence needed to support materials development, quality assurance and failure analysis.
You will explore a range of characterisation methods, including optical microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, diffraction techniques, surface profilometry and energy-dispersive spectroscopy. Through laboratory work or literature-based analysis, you will develop practical skills in interpreting microstructural and surface data while gaining an appreciation of the capabilities and limitations of each technique. Throughout the module, you will strengthen your ability to relate microscopic observations to engineering performance using examples from aerospace, automotive and marine applications.
By the end of the module, you will be able to select and interpret appropriate characterisation techniques for engineering materials, providing an essential skill set for materials engineering, manufacturing, quality assurance and engineering research.
