Module overview

Providing secure, affordable and sustainable energy is one of the defining challenges facing engineers today. This module develops a broad understanding of how energy is generated, distributed and consumed while exploring the environmental and societal issues that shape future energy systems. You will examine global energy flows, the use of conventional and renewable energy resources, and the engineering principles that underpin modern energy technologies. Through the evaluation of topics such as fossil fuel depletion, hydrogen technologies, climate change and the greenhouse effect, you will develop the ability to assess the opportunities and limitations of different energy solutions. Throughout the module, emphasis is placed on applying engineering knowledge to real-world energy challenges and evaluating how different technologies can contribute to a sustainable energy future. By the end of the module, you will be able to assess energy systems from technical, environmental and societal perspectives, developing the knowledge and critical thinking skills needed to contribute to the transition towards more sustainable and resilient energy infrastructures.
