Module overview

The Final Year Project provides the opportunity to tackle a substantial engineering challenge from concept through to completion. Working independently under the guidance of an academic supervisor—and, where appropriate, an industrial sponsor—you will integrate the knowledge, skills and experience gained throughout your programme to develop an innovative engineering solution. Over two semesters, you will plan, design, model, prototype, test and evaluate your project using analytical, computational, experimental or manufacturing techniques appropriate to your chosen topic. Alongside the technical aspects of the project, you will consider the broader responsibilities of professional engineers, including sustainability, ethics, environmental impact, legislation, commercial viability and the societal context of your work. Throughout the project, you will strengthen your project management, decision-making and communication skills through regular meetings, technical reports and professional presentations. By the end of the module, you will have demonstrated your ability to deliver a complex engineering project independently, applying professional judgement and technical expertise to solve an authentic engineering problem. The project provides an ideal preparation for graduate engineering careers, innovation-focused roles and postgraduate study.
