Module overview

Modern engineering systems rely on advanced control and instrumentation to operate safely, efficiently and autonomously. From industrial automation and robotics to autonomous vehicles and aerospace systems, engineers use sophisticated control strategies to monitor, regulate and optimise system performance. This module develops the advanced analytical and practical skills needed to design these intelligent engineering systems. You will build on your knowledge of classical control by exploring state-space methods, multivariable systems, digital control and nonlinear system analysis. Alongside control theory, you will investigate instrumentation systems, measurement technologies and digital signal processing, learning how sensing, computation and control are integrated into complete engineering systems. Throughout the module, you will strengthen your modelling, analysis and design skills while developing an appreciation of the practical challenges involved in implementing advanced control systems. By the end of the module, you will be able to design and evaluate modern control and instrumentation systems for complex engineering applications, preparing you for careers in automation, robotics, aerospace, automotive engineering and intelligent manufacturing.
