Module overview

Designing a successful engineering product requires more than selecting the right materials and manufacturing process—it also depends on efficient production systems and resilient supply chains. This module explores how engineering, manufacturing and operations management combine to deliver high-quality products in an increasingly global and sustainable manufacturing environment. Using contemporary industrial case studies, you will investigate how manufacturing technologies, materials selection and production strategies influence product quality, cost and supply chain performance. You will develop the ability to evaluate manufacturing systems from both technical and managerial perspectives, applying engineering knowledge to analyse production processes, supply chain challenges and operational decision-making. Throughout the module, emphasis is placed on understanding the interconnected nature of modern manufacturing systems and the role of engineers in improving efficiency, resilience and sustainability. By the end of the module, you will be able to evaluate manufacturing and supply chain strategies within realistic engineering contexts, developing the multidisciplinary skills needed for careers in manufacturing, operations, logistics and industrial engineering.
