Dr Wonyong Park is a Lecturer in Science Education within the Southampton Education School at the University of Southampton.
Wonyong holds BSc and MSc degrees in Physics Education from Seoul National University, where he trained as a physics teacher. Prior to joining the School, he received a doctorate in Science Education at the University of Oxford and was a Science Tutor for the Master’s in Learning and Teaching (MLT) programme there.
Wonyong’s research focuses on the intersections of science, humanities and society in the context of education. He has published articles examining how the history and philosophy of science can enrich science teaching in schools, which led to his interest in nature of science (NOS) education. His doctoral research looked into secondary science teachers’ practices in the classroom assessment of NOS. As a member of the Oxford Argumentation in Science and Religion project funded by Templeton World Charity Foundation, he worked with secondary teachers in Oxfordshire and published articles comparing how teachers view and practise argumentation in the two disciplinary contexts.
In recent years, he has been passionate about exploring the role of science and STEM education in building disaster-resilient society in the age of various local and global crises. In so doing, he is committed to interdisciplinary approaches between science and other subjects such as history, social studies, RE and language. He has collaborated internationally with colleagues based in the UK, US, South Korea, Turkey and Taiwan.
Wonyong welcomes informal contacts from potential doctoral students interested in his research areas.
