Jo lives in Essex with her husband, two children, a dog and two cats. As well as undertaking her PhD, Jo is also a part-time administrator for the Medical Technology Research Centre (MTRC) at Anglia Ruskin University. Jo’s interest in autism and inclusion increased in response to her son’s experiences at school and subsequent autism diagnosis. As a result of his experiences, Jo is keen to work with autistic pupils to find out how they can be best supported in mainstream education.
For her PhD, Jo will be exploring how a nurture group can support autistic secondary school pupils, particularly with regards to transitions. Participatory methods will be used as the children’s voices are central to this study. The research follows on from Jo’s undergraduate thesis which examined the extent to which one school’s nurture group helped all mainstream pupils develop an attachment to schooling.
Jo is keen to develop her teaching skills and will be undertaking the relevant modules in 2022.
Jo has worked in a variety of roles throughout her career. She has taught English in China to children aged 4-15, edited local and national magazines and has been employed as an administrator and project manager in several departments at Anglia Ruskin University since 2009. Jo is now undertaking a part-time PhD at the University of Southampton and is a member of Southampton’s Centre for Research in Inclusion (CRI) and the Autism Community Research Network @ Southampton (ACoRNS).
