Some of the BG Chairs' achievements

The BG Chair of Environmental Technology was established in September 1994, to provide an international centre of excellence in environmental engineering and management for Kazakhstan and Central Asia. The overall objectives of the BG Chair are to develop practical solutions to some of the region's many environmental problems, and to improve the understanding of environmental management techniques. The BG Chair aims to bring together expertise from a wide range of organisations in Europe, Kazakhstan and elsewhere. The activities of the BG Chair include • Development of an active research programme directed towards the environmental problems of Kazakhstan and Central Asia • Provision of specific know-how in environmental management and technology to complement existing scientific and technical expertise within the region • Creation of multidisciplinary teams to identify projects and put forward appropriate solutions in the field of environmental engineering and management • Raising awareness amongst engineers, scientists, academics and environmentalists, and provision of training for those involved in education in the field of environmental management and protection The BG Chair in Kazakhstan is based in the Almaty Institute of Power Engineering and Telecommunications (AIPET) and has links with a very wide range of research and educational institutes. Facilities include a laboratory that provides a wide range of analytical services, including all basic water parameters. The range of equipment is constantly being extended as projects are undertaken in additional areas. The BG Chair in Kazakhstan is the product of collaboration between AIPET and the University of Southampton in Great Britain. AIPET trains engineers in a number of disciplines. The School of Civil Engineering and the Environment at the University of Southampton has extensive experience of research, development and training in many countries. The initiative was set up with sponsorship from BG Group and is supported by the BG Foundation.
