Research project: High efficiency low-cost photosensitised crystalline silicon solar cells

This project aims to significantly reduce the amount of silicon currently used in solar cells by developing light harvesting structures which can be used with ultra-thin silicon solar cells while maintaining current efficiencies.

Project Overview

The idea is based on dividing the photovoltaic conversion process into two natural stagse.  Materials with different optical and electronic properties are used for each of the two fundamental steps: an energy collector based on a light harvesting structure which absorbs light with a high optical absorption cross section, and transfers energy to a semiconductor converter which separates efficiently the photo-generated charges and produces electricity.  The implementation into a photovoltaic structure is based on state of the art developments in photonics and molecular excitation energy transport, similar to the light harvesting process occurring in photosynthesis.
