Proof-mass actuators are typically used to supply an external control force to an external structure, for the purpose of vibration suppression. These devices comprise a proof-mass suspended in a magnetic field that is accelerated in order to provide a reaction force on the actuator casing and the structure itself.

Project Overview

Proof-mass actuators are typically used to supply an external control force to an external structure, for the purpose of vibration suppression. These devices comprise a proof-mass suspended in a magnetic field that is accelerated in order to provide a reaction force on the actuator casing and the structure itself. If the proof-mass reaches or exceeds the actuator stroke length, it will hit the end stops, thereby imparting large shocks to the structure that may destabilise the closed-loop system.

This phenomenon, known as stroke saturation, results in a strongly nonlinear closed-loop system that requires careful dynamic analysis in order to establish the conditions for instability, and how to prevent it from occurring. The main aim of this research is to investigate the dynamics of a proof-mass actuator using experimental measurements, in order to devise a suitable actuator model for active control simulations.
