Research project: Natural products as marine antifoulants

The aim of this project is to design environmentally acceptable marine antifoulants, to harness the natural chemical defence mechanisms of non-fouled organisms.

Project Overview

Extraction and/or synthesis of natural products from UK native marine organisations will be investigated for a marine antifouling coating system.  A key aspect of this project is to measure the degradatio and efficacy of potential natural products as well as their viability in a coating system in varying environmental conditions.  The fouling population of Southampton dock water (as well as other areas) will be characterized.  Overall, the project aims to develop bio-compatible and non-toxic antifoulants that can be incorporated into an antifouling coating system.
