I am a PhD researcher, exploring obstetric violence issues in English Maternity Care using a rights-based approach. Obstetric violence is a form of gender-based violence, being essentially poor treatment while giving birth, which infringes human rights and causes harm.
My PhD study is the Right Birth Study, a mixed-method study which firstly explores perceptions of obstetric violence in English maternity care among 'expert witnesses' in the English maternity system, and then aims to develop a measurement tool to enable obstetric violence in England to be identified, better understood, reported and addressed.
