About
Bilal is a PhD researcher in Control Systems Engineering in the Future Mobility Lab, University of Southampton, founded by Dr Anil Madhusudhanan. His work focuses on energy-efficient motion control for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs), with particular emphasis on signalised-intersection crossing using Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) communication. He combines data-driven modelling and model-based control with real-world validation, developing methods that can be evaluated systematically in simulation and on instrumented vehicles.
Bilal’s research integrates EV energy-consumption modelling using System Identification (NARX) and machine learning, trajectory optimisation for signal crossing, and Model Predictive Control (MPC) for closed-loop longitudinal control. A core part of his work is building repeatable experimental workflows, including Vehicle-in-the-Loop evaluation to correlate simulation and real-vehicle testing results.
