Biography
Dr. Tonglei Cheng has his expertise in soft-glass optical fibers, nonlinear fiber optics and fiber sensors. He received the Ph.D. degree in optical engineering from Tianjin University, China in 2010. Since 2010, he has been a PD, JSPS Postdoctoral Fellow and JSPS Invitational Fellowship at the Toyota Technological Institute, Nagoya, Japan. In 2016, he became an assistant professor at the Toyota Technological Institute. In 2017, he joined Northeastern University (China) as a Full Professor. And since 2025, he has been working in the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) at the University of Southampton, UK.
He is currently an Principal Research Fellow in Fiber and Communication Group at the ORC. His research interests include soft-glass optical fibers, nonlinear optics, mid-infrared fiber devices and fiber sensors, etc.
