About

Dr Ali Ghanbarzadeh is an Associate Professor in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Southampton, specialising in tribology, lubrication, surface engineering and contact mechanics.

He has over 14 years of combined academic and industrial experience, including five years as an Assistant Professor at the University of Leeds and three years at Jaguar Land Rover, where he led research and technology development in tribology, surface technologies and lubrication for electric propulsion systems.

His research spans mixed and elastohydrodynamic lubrication, tribochemistry, surface engineering, EV transmission fluids, gear and bearing tribology, friction, wear and durability, with a strong emphasis on translating fundamental research into engineering solutions.

He has worked extensively with automotive OEMs, Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers, lubricant and additive manufacturers, and universities through industry- and government-funded research programmes, including major UKRI and Advanced Propulsion Centre projects.

He holds a PhD in Tribochemistry of Lubricant Additives and is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, with a track record encompassing more than 55 peer-reviewed publications, patents, industrial research programmes.
