Our research

Our academic experts are helping to improve the future of human communication through accessible technologies.

We work to advance technologies that enable human to human and human to machine interaction, including devices that interact directly with the brain.

Areas we investigate include:

  • the quality and intelligibility of speech in noisy environments
  • speech detection using sensors
  • technology that allows devices to communicate with humans

A particular focus of our research is the design of digital communication tools for healthcare, such as apps for the remote monitoring of patients’ health.

Benefits include:

  • increased patient engagement and empowerment
  • more efficient and cost-effective services
  • health issues being identified and managed earlier

We also:

  • develop technology to enable greater participation in work, education and leisure
  • steer future improvements in classroom and learning technology
  • devise digital communication technologies to support the workforce
  • improve access to, and enjoyment of, entertainment, gaming and the arts
