Primary Medical Care

Led by Dr Pritti Aggarwal

Primary Medical care is an exciting area of research within medical education. We work closely with staff and students to explore novel and innovative projects. These include experiences of Primary Care and placement learning.

“Gatekeepers, wizards, and a mutual appreciation of each other's kingdoms” published in the BMJ in 2021, by Pritti Aggarwal and Harnish Patel states: Collaborative working is crucial to providing joined up, high quality care, yet medicine continues to be a divided profession of gatekeepers (GPs) and wizards (specialists).

The covid-19 pandemic has exacerbated this sense of estrangement, with ever increasing workloads not conducive to goodwill across healthcare teams. More than ever, we need to create a shared understanding of each other’s roles and ignite opportunities for interprofessional education and communication.

  • Working with students in their third year has resulted in projects that have explored South Central Ambulance Services (SCAS) feasibility as a placement for medical students.  Looking at how our students can learn about the pre-hospital/community care as well as the interface of primary and secondary care interactions.
  • Gamification – a systematic review looking at the effectiveness of game-based learning in Medical education. Does this change the way our students learn and get their degrees, does it help with them passing exams?
  • A service evaluation of the understanding the awareness of Cow’s milk allergy with parents and support they may receive.
  • Frailty and the implications on health service provisions
  • GP consultant liaison project – looking at the interface of primary secondary care and improving patient outcomes through understanding of challenges we face.
