MINDS PCTA: Understanding mental health self-management in autistic/ADHD/AuDHD adults

Project overview

Background
Autistic people often have ADHD, and vice-versa. It is common for autistic/ADHD adults to have mental health difficulties. In primary care, there is not enough mental health support available for autistic/ADHD adults.

Aim
To create a plan for support for autistic/ADHD adults with mental health problems in primary care

Methods
This project will take a second look at interviews completed with autistic/ADHD adults who spoke about their mental health to find out what things might help them. The project will also review studies that have been done on the experiences of people who have used computer-based support for their autism/ADHD. We will use all of this information to create a plan for how to support autistic/ADHD adults’ mental health in primary care. We will meet regularly with a small group of autistic/ADHD adults and with people who provide support services (like charities and primary care staff) to create this plan together.

Impact
We will share our findings widely including through charity websites and social media. We will use our findings to create a plan for mental health support for autistic/ADHD adults and apply for funding to make and test this support.

Funding: Faculty of Medicine Postdoctoral Career Track Award.
