Project overview
The 3i-lab for Individualised and Inclusive Interventions in mental health is devoted to developing strategies to support more tailored and cost-effective interventions.
Part of the Centre for Innovation in Mental Health, the 3i-lab brings together a multidisciplinary team across Psychology, Psychiatry and Engineering and has been developed with the support of NIHR (NIHR Advanced Fellowship, NIHR305518, CI: Dr Valeria Parlatini).
We are currently setting up a new study aiming at testing a new method to select medication for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) based on individual pre-treatment characteristics.
ADHD is very common and people with ADHD often wait years to start treatment. Although ADHD medications, such as methylphenidate (MPH), are generally effective, response may vary from person to person.
If MPH, the most commonly used first line ADHD medication, does not work, clinicians will try other medicines, one by one. This approach is expensive and delays getting the right treatment, as it can take months to find the right medication for an individual with ADHD.
In this study, we want to predict who is going to benefit from MPH or not in the longer term, based on pre-treatment clinical, cognitive and physiological characteristics.
If this approach works, it could help people with ADHD receive effective treatment sooner.
We are currently recruiting children, adolescents and adults from existing ADHD waiting lists at participating NHS clinics only (Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust).
