Validating the Tranquil City Index: Towards a Planning-Relevant Indicator of Urban Tranquillity

Project overview

The HEIF 2025 project aims to validate the Tranquil City Index (TCI) as a planning-relevant indicator of urban tranquillity by linking it with psychological data from the Perceived Restorativeness Scale (PRS). Through fieldwork at contrasting urban sites across Southampton, the project compares TCI scores with subjective assessments of restorativeness and tranquillity.

The findings will support the use of tranquillity metrics in environmental planning, urban design, and noise policy. Outputs include a public dataset, a policy briefing for planners, and academic dissemination to underpin future funding proposals.
