About the project
In Railway Noise, one of the most pressing problems affecting passengers and inhabitants, is currently curve squeal or screech. This is a loud tonal noise that can occur in curves and has made the news on numerous occasions for the London Underground. It is an unpredictable phenomenon where a small uncertainty in input data can result in dramatic differences in the results. Models exist but their main weakness is in the uncertainty of inputs and lack of validation.
The PhD research will aim first at validating the existing models using field measurements at sites in the UK. Proposed enhancements to the models will be implemented, followed by their application in the assessment of mitigation measures. These will include lubrication, changes in the design of the track and the wheel and the effect of wheel/rail dampers.
