Anastasia said: “I chose to come and study at Southampton as the level of the University’s music department was very high and it was ranked the third highest university for music in the UK.”
This strong reputation combined with the diversity that the course offered, enabled Anastasia to explore a wide range of musical interests.
A broad and diverse music curriculum
One of the aspects that Anastasia most valued about the programme was that students could tailor their studies to their own interests with modules covering everything from classical music and performance to hip hop and the music business.
She explained: "The course itself is extremely diverse, as there are different genres to choose from for performance-based students. There are also various dissertation options so students can choose to focus on performance, composition or essays.
“I was particularly interested in performance, jazz theory and learning about how the music industry works. The department has numerous practice rooms, studios and ensemble rooms, as well as a Mac lab, where music students have access to software that is used throughout our degree."
The programme also allowed her to continue her study of Spanish, alongside her music degree.
Growing as a person
Reflecting on her time at Southampton, Anastasia believes the combination of academic excellence, course flexibility and supportive teaching helped her develop both personally and professionally.
She said: "All of the lecturers were always happy to help and share their knowledge with us, not only academic-wise but also supporting us with information about future careers and helpful tips about the music industry."
She credits these lecturers with expanding her musical knowledge and helping her become a more confident musician, while living independently has encouraged her to become more self-reliant and confident in her decision-making.
Beyond the lecture theatre
One of Anastasia’s highlights outside of her studies, was performing with her eight-piece funk and disco band Copacetic.
One of my best experiences was when our band performed at University Open Days. We really enjoyed it and it brought us closer as a band.
For prospective students considering music at Southampton, Anastasia strongly recommends the experience.
"There are lots of opportunities during your time here, the academics are very helpful and you will create a lot of memories to look back on with the friends you make."
After she graduates, Anastasia plans to apply for a master’s degree in music management or music business.
