Forging external partnerships

Published:

As the President of the Engineers without Borders (EWB) Southampton Society, penultimate year engineering student Yaviin Jayasoma has grown the membership and ensured the continued success of the Society into the future.

During his presidency, Yaviin has actively introduced a wide range of initiatives including hands-on workshops, inspiring guest speaker events, engaging competitions, and collaborative projects with other societies.

He has built relationships with other Southampton societies such as EngSoc, SUWES, CivSoc, and Enactus, which led to joint events such as the Halloween Social and the Engineering Ball. Additionally, he has secured £1,458.90 in funding through grant applications and sponsorships, leaving £872.27 for the following year.

“After meeting with Enactus Southampton Advisor Simon Troup, I helped forge a connection with Jonathan Guna, University Programme Coordinator for EWB UK. This resulted in a partnership between EWB and the Enactus initiative WonkyBowl, supporting their homelessness project through an exclusive EWB member offer,” says Yaviin.

Yaviin’s leadership style has been deeply inclusive and adaptive. He actively sought input from his committee, valuing their opinions and ideas to refine the society’s strategies and maximise engagement.

This openness fostered a sense of collective ownership, inspiring the team to contribute their best efforts. Not only did he steer the society towards success, but he also laid out a roadmap for future improvements, ensuring a strong foundation for the next academic year.
