Why I chose Southampton
I came to study in Southampton because you get the pleasure of having a campus university where everything is one spot, whilst still enjoying the benefits and convenience of being in a city. I was especially attracted to having a spacious green common right next to the university.
It's simply brilliant, because studying environmental science means I get the latest up-to-date knowledge on the biggest pressures facing our planet, and I can't really imagine doing anything else.
Gaining practical experience abroad
I most enjoy the practical element of my course, especially the fieldtrips. Learning about places is one thing but being able to visualize them really helps me learn, especially as a visual learner.

I studied abroad during the summer of my first year and volunteered at a school in Uganda. That really taught me how people are an integral part of the environment and are often overlooked.
In the summer of my second year, I went to Vietnam to collect research for my dissertation into peoples attitudes towards plastic pollution. The trip greatly enhanced my research skills whilst also giving me that deeper contextual understanding.
Support during my studies
I have found the academics here extremely supportive both of my academic and extra-curricular interests. They are always prepared to answer my questions after lectures which is great because I always come out of lectures with more questions.

Speaking to my Personal Academic Tutor, Rob, when it all got a bit much was very helpful, or asking Linley for advice on my module choices or speaking to Simon about my dissertation and Vietnam. The academics have always been there and I appreciate that.
One of the best decisions I made was to join my society, Enactus. It really helped me gain professional skills, plus a load of friends outside my course. It gave me the opportunity to travel up to Scotland and attend the Green Gown Awards ceremony and also gave me the platform to expand my social enterprise into Japan.
My experience at University of Southampton has helped me become more confident, professional and outgoing. It's also shown me how many opportunities there are for those that seek them and set me on a solid path for the future.
