For JaiKrishnan, Southampton provided great opportunities to develop in all respects, academically, career-wise and personally.
New experiences and growth
“The course had a strong balance between theory and practical application and the supportive lecturers were experts in their fields. Facilities such as the Business School’s data labs, collaborative study spaces and library resources were incredibly modern and conducive to effective learning.”
“I joined many clubs and societies where I developed myself by proactively taking part in events and activities. I was the Captain of the University of Southampton Chess Club B Team and that helped me build on my leadership qualities and sportsmanship.”
He also received the Southampton Business School Dean’s International Scholarship, which he said gave him recognition for his studies and provided motivation for him to study at Southampton.
During his time at Southampton, he worked as a lead student ambassador for the University, guiding hundreds of prospective students and parents during Open Days, as well as working with the University’s Marketing and Admissions Team portraying the student voice through testimonials, photoshoots, vlogs and media campaigns.
He said: “These varied roles sharpened my ability to coordinate diverse teams, engage large audiences and deliver personalised support.”
JaiKrishnan says that when he moved to Southampton, it felt like a second home. He got the chance to collaborate with people from different backgrounds and have experiences that reminded him of his hometown in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, India.
He said: “Southampton offered a more global, diverse environment with a strong sense of independence. The University’s structured support system such as approachable staff, student services and peer networks, made it easy to adapt. I could reach out for help when I needed it and felt at home. It taught me how to manage both academic and personal challenges confidently in a new cultural setting.”
Helping future students
Since he graduated, JaiKrishnan has been working part-time as a Student Ambassador at the University, while exploring full-time employment opportunities in the UK.
He has also been involved in supporting the marketing of Southampton’s new Delhi campus through student testimonials and brand promotion in collaboration with the University’s Marketing and Admissions Team.
He said: “It is incredibly rewarding to give back to the institution that shaped my academic and professional journey, while also helping to inspire and attract future students.”
Advice for new students
JaiKrishnan says there are a few pieces of advice he would give students starting out.
He said: “Be open to exploring different roles in the early stages of your career, even if it’s a role that isn’t your ideal job. Each experience contributes to your growth and helps you discover your true interests.
“Focus on building strong professional relationships. The people you connect with can provide valuable guidance and open doors to new opportunities.
“Don’t worry if you don’t have everything figured out straight away. Career paths are rarely linear, and it’s perfectly normal to change direction as you gain experience.
Most importantly, stay curious and keep learning. Continual development is essential in today’s dynamic job market.”
