EDUC6436 Teaching and Learning for Professional Development (January)

Module Overview

In this module students will explore the fundamentals of teaching and learning at work. They will examine learning theories, theories of assessment, evaluate teaching methods and identify and evaluate appropriate educational resources. They will explore the context of professional development and key policy areas that effect how this takes place in practice. This module is taught at M level.

By the end of this module you will be able to: Develop and use a range of teaching and learning techniques; Maintain an effective learning environment; Communicate effectively with learners; Monitor and assess students as you teach; Manage the learning process; Provide learners with support; Demonstrate professional values and practice; Demonstrate appropriate subject knowledge.; Utilise relevant pedagogies to teach your subject.

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

  • Evaluate the implications of a range of learning theories on your own professional practice
  • Evaluating your own professional practice with regard to individual and group learning sessions
  • Appreciate the current professional standards in teaching and how they impact upon your own development.
  • Evaluate a policy area within professional development and explore the implications of this for you and your organisation.
  • Demonstrate your ability to develop, plan and manage the learning process using an appropriate range of inclusive teaching and learning strategies.
  • Illustrate how curricula documents inform the planning of your sessions and programme
  • Monitor and assess learners using appropriate assessment methods to measure learning and to evaluate achievement accurately and negotiate plans of action.
  • Provide formative and summative feedback to learners.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of effective communication techniques and interpersonal skills whilst facilitating coaching and support for learners
  • Demonstrate and explain ways to challenge discriminatory behaviours where they occur in the learning environment.
  • Promote equality diversity and inclusion.
  • Plan learning which meets individual learners' and whole group needs.


The syllabus covers the theories associated with good teaching and learning and how they can be interpreted in the classroom. Students will also research and evaluate a particular policy area and how it impacts upon their learners and their organisation.

Trainees will receive formal lessons on a range of learning and assessment theory. They will develop their research methods prior to examining a specialist policy area that relates to professional practice.

Costs associated with this module

Students are responsible for meeting the cost of essential textbooks, and of producing such essays, assignments, laboratory reports and dissertations as are required to fulfil the academic requirements for each programme of study.

Travel Costs for placements

Costs may include travel costs to and from placement as well as costs of materials associated with general teaching, such as stationary and the wearing of appropriate and professional attire. Trainees will not incur costs 'over and above that expected by qualified teachers employed by that school'. (placements)
