Design Research and Impact Methods
This module equips you with core design research and evaluations tools. You will explore a range of design-research methods—visual, spatial, participatory, and digital—and learn how to frame research questions, apply research ethics, justify your approach, and assess the potential impacts of your work. You will develop a research question and plan to implement in the final project. -

Design Skills and Practices
In this module, you will further develop your practical design skills and engage with design methods, techniques, and processes. Alongside fundamental technical knowledge, drawing, and applications, the module introduces ergonomics and user-centred design. You will undertake observation, investigation, and creative problem-solving, testing ideas through 2D and 3D physical and digital models.
The module provides foundational knowledge and its application across key technical aspects of product design, including basic scientific and engineering principles, as well as materials and manufacturing considerations. You will have opportunities to further explore the functional dimensions of design.
Communication and presentation skills are reinforced, alongside strategies for managing projects. You continue to develop your ability to use physical and digital tools and software.
Studio-based learning, technical workshops, and laboratory visits support the learning experience. -

Design Thinking for Complex Systems
Design Thinking for Complex Systems is a practice-based module that equips you with critical and creative tools to navigate real-world complexity. You will develop the skills to design resilient, future-oriented solutions grounded in critical analysis and social responsibility. Activities include mapping systemic relationships, prototyping service and product ecosystems, and visually communicating complexity. Through collaborative projects, you will learn how to map, diagnose, and intervene in systemic challenges using advanced design and technical methods. The module tackles urgent issues such as climate adaptation, responsible technology, and inclusive innovation - focusing on areas like resilient healthcare services, sustainable climate interventions, and responsible digital transformation.
Guest lectures, industry-led workshops, and field-based insights connect you with current practices and ensure that your learning remains relevant on both regional and global scales. -
