Medical Humanities
Medical Humanities is an interdisciplinary field that explores the intersection of medicine, healthcare practices, and the human experience through the lens of the arts, humanities, and social sciences. It promotes a more holistic approach to patient care by integrating both the scientific and humanistic dimensions of medicine.
As part of the module, students explore a particular area of medicine through arts and humanities subjects and produce a piece of creative work, either independently or in small groups. For example, students might examine representations of doctors and patients in literature, films, and TV series; engage in discussions about how the media portrays the current mental health crisis; or study the human body through life drawing sessions. Creative works might include podcasts, short stories, photographic self-portraits, drawings, zines, group presentations, as well as performances such as drama or dance, and much more.
Students can choose from a wide range of disciplines, including visual art, music, film studies, theatre, creative writing, philosophy, history of medicine, and global health. They also reflect on the entire experience, considering what they have learned and how it might inform their future professional practice. -

Medical Microbiology
This module aims to provide a comprehensive introduction to microbiology, including fundamental aspects of microbial diversity and physiology, and with a focus on selected themes that are essential features of medical microbiology. The module will be designed to include up-to-date understanding of modern research in these fields and the link between laboratory-based discovery science and contemporary medical microbiology. The structure of the laboratory sessions will provide training in the practical skills necessary for microbiology in academic research or in the workplace. This module will feed into 3rd year modules ‘Biofilms and Microbial Communities’ and 'Microbiomes and Health' that include more emphasis on Southampton’s research strengths in microbiology and that will include contributions from staff in other faculties across the University. -

Medical Physics
Applications of physics to medicine will be of particular interest to those contemplating a career in this field. The course is taught primarily by staff from the School of Physics and Astronomy, but brings in staff from Southampton General Hospital who are experts in the specific fields covered to provide more 'hands-on' experience of the techniques. The course includes several visits to the General Hospital to see something of medical physics and radiotherapy in practice. -

Medicinal Chemistry
Medicinal Chemistry is pivotal in the design, synthesis and evaluation of new medicines, and involves multidisciplinary research at the interface of Chemistry, Biology and Medicine. This module will introduce key molecular concepts and methods in Medicinal Chemistry, and the central role played by chemists in the development of drug candidates targeting diverse disease states and their associated biomolecular targets (for example proteins, DNA). Through important historical case studies, we will discuss the properties and modes of action of pharmaceuticals in biological systems, from “classical” inhibitors to more contemporary and cutting-edge bioactive compounds, such as protein degraders, pharmacological chaperones, and targeted covalent inhibitors. Students will have access to a broad range of resources, including recent specialist literature and software, along with additional recorded content that illustrate important concepts covered in the lectures.
