Purpose-built student laboratories and design studios are available for students to use during the individual and group design projects that are essential practical elements of their degree, they can also be used by PhD students and staff working on research projects.

The Engineering Design and Manufacturing Centre (EDMC) has a student workshop with manual lathes, manual mills, a band saw, a pillar drill and a laser cutter.

The Design Workshop contains seven bays, each equipped with a PC and an extensive range of hand tools. A small machine shop also for student use includes a laser cutter, band saw and pillar drills. Up to 40 students can use the Design Workshop at any one time.

These new workshops enable more engineering students to gain hands-on experience in the practical side of the subject at an early stage in their university education and Technicians are on hand to assist the students when necessary.

During their first year, undergraduates attend Southampton City College for instruction in the safe use of machinery and learn basic mechanical techniques before they are allowed to use the equipment in the universities workshops.
