Dr Louis Bayman is lecturer in Film at the University of Southampton.

I studied at the Universities of Glasgow, Warwick and King's College, London, where I completed my AHRC-funded PhD research, which was published in 2014 with the title The Operatic and the Everyday in Post-war Italian Film Melodrama (Edinburgh University Press). I have published further on Italian cinema, and more generally on popular genres and aesthetics in the cinema, and write for a range of publications including as a reviewer and critic. I am developing current research projects on neoliberalism in contemporary cinema and the analysis of time in entertainment. I have taught in Universities in the UK and in Rome, and I have been at the University of Southampton since September, 2015. I teach on the Introduction to Hollywood and European Cinema modules, Film Noir, Film, Realism and Reality, and Horror modules.

Research interests

My main principle specialisms are in melodrama studies and Italian cinema. I have research interests in the aesthetics of cinema and film form, in horror and serial killer cinema, as well as issues of popular culture, genre, realism and methodologies of film analysis. I have a developing interest in Latin American and especially Brazilian cinema, as well as in journey narratives in cinema, and am developing a large-scale research project on theatricality as an idea that informs film.

Book Chapters

I teach on the Introduction to Hollywood and European Cinema modules, Film Noir, and American Cinema since 1965.
