Research project: Meridional Overturning and North Atlantic heat Content (MONACO)

Currently Active:
Yes

The main goal of MONACO is to understand the links between variations of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation and associated meridional heat transport – estimated with the RAPID-WATCH observing system – and subannual to interannual variability of regional oceanic heat content (inferred from Argo floats) and sea surface temperatures.

A full overview, background and objectives of the project are shown on  http://www.noc.soton.ac.uk/ooc/PROJECTS/MONACO/. Research is undertaken in collaboration with National Oceanography Centre (NOC).

Dates: June 2009 - January 2013.

Funding agency: NERC (Natural Environment Research Council)

PI: Dr Neil Wells
