I studied at the Universities of Oxford (French and German), Sussex (Education) and Reading (Linguistics) and I completed my doctoral research at the University of Southampton on the sociolinguistic history of east and west in German since 1945.
After working as a translator in London, I was appointed to a lectureship in German at the University of Southampton in 1979. I was promoted to Reader in German in 1999 and to Professor of German and Linguistics in 2004. I retired in 2018 after 39 years of teaching and research at the University.
