Current research
My current research focuses on how state institutions such as language academies are adapting to new patterns of language innovation, change and standardization in the 21st century.
I am also embarking on a new discourse studies project that considers how language is used at the level of local politcs and devolved government, how this differs from the national level, and what impact this has on the policy-making process in crucial areas like climate change. Working with Dr Michael Kranert, the project will compare case studies in the UK and Germany.

Biography
I'm a Senior Lecturer in Spanish and Linguistics, and teach modules on the history and development of the Spanish language from Latin dialect to global language. I also lecture on general sociolinguistics, especially language policy, ideologies, and the relationship between language and politics.
My interests are mostly centred around the Spanish speaking world: I have taught English and researched bilingual education policy in Santiago, Chile. I have also established student exchange programmes in Chile and Colombia, and have carried out research on language in migration in Mexico.
As well as my current teaching and research responsibilities, I am the Director of Undergraduate Recruitment and Admissions for the School of Humanities. Beyond the university, I have served on the Executive Committee of the Association for the Study of Spanish in Society, was previously an External Examiner for the University of Surrey, and have co-organised conferences including the International Sociolinguistics Symposium, and the Spanish in Society conferences in London, Edinburgh, and Southampton.
