Chiying is a Lecturer of Community Music and Social Justice. Born and raised in Hong Kong, Chiying completed her doctoral study at the Royal College of Music, London, and her research focuses on musicians' pedagogical practice and post-colonial discourses of power & identity within the music practitioners' community. She obtained her Bachelor of Education (honours) and Master of Arts in Music Education at The Education University of Hong Kong. She is currently the convenor of the Social Justice SIG of the British Educational Research Association (BERA).
Chiying also serves different roles in multiple organisations, including the trustee of EPTA (European Piano Teacher Association) and the former trustee of Soundmix, which provides music & art workshops for refugee and asylum-seeking children and young people. She co-founded Little Bean Theatre, a bilingual family and early years theatre promoting the importance of the heritage language. She is also the music director and organist of St Mary Magdalene Church.
