Chiying Lam is a Lecturer in Community Music and Social Justice. Born and raised in Hong Kong, she completed her doctoral studies at the Royal College of Music, London. Her research focuses on musicians’ pedagogical practices and post-colonial discourses of power and identity within the music practitioner community. She holds a Bachelor of Education (Honours) and a Master of Arts in Music Education from The Education University of Hong Kong.
She currently serves as the convenor of the Social Justice Special Interest Group (SIG) within the British Educational Research Association (BERA) and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Public Health. She is also a Neurologic Music Therapy Allied Professional.
Chiying contributes to several organisations in various capacities. She is a trustee of the European Piano Teachers Association (EPTA) and a former trustee of Soundmix, which offers music and art workshops for refugee and asylum-seeking children and young people. She co-founded Little Bean Theatre, a bilingual family and early years theatre dedicated to promoting heritage language preservation. Additionally, she serves as the Music Director and Organist at St Mary Magdalene Church.
Chiying is a member of the Editorial Board of Music Education Research (MER), a reviewer for the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) through the NIHR Reviewer Development Scheme (2024–2029), and a member of the ESRC Peer Review College.
In 2025, Chiying was selected as a member of the UK Young Academy, a partnership between the UK’s national academies, and was recognised as one of 20 Female Science Talents 2026 by the Falling Walls Foundation.
