About
Sergio Araujo-Estrada (he/him), pronounced Ser-hee-oh, is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Control and Robotics at the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at the University of Southampton.
His research focuses on developing techniques to model and control robotic systems, for example Uninhabited Vehicles for air and/or water environments. In particular, his research aims to improve functionality and trustworthiness of these vehicles by taking inspiration from nature and applying it to them.
His motivation can be summarised as follows:
“I find it amazing that with a handful of equations you can describe how a vehicle (e.g., aircraft, ship) moves (through the air, water or on the ground), and not only that, but with this knowledge you can predict and modify what its future state will be.
However, there are cases where these equations/models a not up to the job. I would like to find out the limits of these models and propose/find improved ones. We can then use these to propose novel vehicle configurations.”
You can update this in Pure (opens in a new tab). Select ‘Edit profile’. Under the heading and then ‘Curriculum and research description’, select ‘Add profile information’. In the dropdown menu, select - ‘About’.
Write about yourself in the third person. Aim for 100 to 150 words covering the main points about who you are and what you currently do. Clear, simple language is best. You can include specialist or technical terms.
You’ll be able to add details about your research, publications, career and academic history to other sections of your staff profile.
Research
Your current research, published research topics, projects and groups.
This section will only display on your public profile if you’ve added content.
You can update the information for this section in Pure (opens in a new tab).
Research groups
Any research groups you belong to will automatically appear on your profile. Speak to your line manager if these are incorrect. Please do not raise a ticket in Ask HR.
Research interests
Add up to 5 research interests. The first 3 will appear in your staff profile next to your name. The full list will appear on your research page. Keep these brief and focus on the keywords people may use when searching for your work. Use a different line for each one.
In Pure (opens in a new tab), select ‘Edit profile’. Under the heading 'Curriculum and research description', select 'Add profile information'. In the dropdown menu, select 'Research interests: use separate lines'.
Current research
Update this in Pure (opens in a new tab). Select ‘Edit profile’ and then ‘Curriculum and research description - Current research’.
Describe your current research in 100 to 200 words. Write in the third person. Include broad key terms to help people discover your work, for example, “sustainability” or “fashion textiles”.
Research projects
Research Council funded projects will automatically appear here. The active project name is taken from the finance system.
Publications
Pagination
Public outputs that list you as an author will appear here, once they’re validated by the ePrints Team. If you’re missing any outputs that you’ve added to Pure, they may be waiting for validation.
Supervision
Current PhD Students
Contact your Faculty Operating Service team to update PhD students you supervise and any you’ve previously supervised. Making this information available will help potential PhD applicants to find you.
Teaching
Currently teaching tutorial sessions for Introduction to Aeronautics and Astronautics SESA1015 and leading CubeSat group design for Systems Design and Computing FEEG2001.
You can update your teaching description in Pure (opens in a new tab). Select ‘Edit profile’. Under the heading and then ‘Curriculum and research description’ , select ‘Add profile information’. In the dropdown menu, select – ‘Teaching Interests’. Describe your teaching interests and your current responsibilities. Aim for 200 words maximum.
Courses and modules
Contact the Curriculum and Quality Assurance (CQA) team for your faculty to update this section.
External roles and responsibilities
These are the public-facing activities you’d like people to know about.
This section will only display on your public profile if you’ve added content.
You can update your external roles and responsibilities in Pure (opens in a new tab). Select ‘+ Add content’ and then ‘Activity’, your ‘Personal’ tab and then ‘Activities’. Choose which activities you want to show on your public profile.

Biography
Sergio was born and grew up on the outskirts of Mexico City. Since childhood he displayed a strong interest and curiosity in flying machines, drawing futuristic airplanes, spaceships and space colonies.
This led him to get a BEng degree in Aerospace Engineering at the School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering with the National Polytechnic Institute (Mexico). After this he had his first experience with experimental work while pursuing an MSc in Electrical Engineering at the Research and Advanced Studies Centre (CINVESTAV-Mexico), where he used a nonlinear parameter estimation technique (Immersion and Invariance) applied to a fixed-wing UAV.
After realising that his love for Aerospace Engineering was stronger that his love for sunny weather, Sergio moved to the UK to obtain a PhD in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Bristol (2017). Here, he studied nonlinear flight dynamics and wrote his thesis entitled “Control of a Wind Tunnel Manoeuvre-Rig to Physically Simulate Free-Flight Motion of an Aircraft Model”.
After his PhD, Sergio liked the research environment so much that he decided to work as a postdoctoral researcher, studying bio-inspiration concepts applied to flight control of UAVs. Here, he worked on things such as wind tunnel testing, numerical simulation, distributed sensing and wing-morphing technology applied to UAVs.
In June 2022, he joined the University of Southampton as a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Control and Robotics.
In his free time Sergio enjoys:
- practicing sport, e.g., swimming, running, cycling;
- reading books, including a broad range of genres from science fiction to science dissemination, all the way to politics and history;
- tv-watching, things like movies, tv series/programs (e.g., The IT Crowd, Breaking Bad, Last Week Tonight), adult-oriented animation (e.g., Archer, South Park, Rick and Morty) and anime;
- drinking coffee and eating buttery pastries (e.g., pain au chocolate, croissant).
His ideal Saturday/Sunday morning is to enjoy a coffee and a pastry, after a run/swim, preferably while reading a good article/book.
