Lawrence Singleton is currently a Research Fellow at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research. His research covers both active and passive control of noise and vibration, with specific focusses on acoustic black holes, multi-function metamaterials and energy harvesting. He is currently supported by a UK Metamaterials Network Pump Prime grant, investigating multi-fuction metamaterials which utilise energy harvesting to actively enhance their performance.
Lawrence graduated from the University of Surrey in 2014 with a BMus (Tonmeister) in Music and Sound Recording. After 3 years working in audio visual systems design he completed the MSc in Acoustical Engineering at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR) at the University of Southampton, with a thesis on adaptive filtering of distributed-mode loudspeakers for improved audio quality, graduating with distinction in 2018. Following this he carried out his doctoral research in the Signal Processing. Audio and Hearing group of the ISVR on the subject of metamaterials for robust vibration control. This was funded by the Intelligent Structures for Low Noise Enviroments (ISLNE) EPSRC Prosperity Partnership. Having received the PhD in 2023, he was then appointed as a Research Fellow at the ISVR. In 2025 he was awarded a UK Metamaterials Network Plus Pump Prime Fund grant.
