Dr Thomas Sutherland

I currently convene three modules – FILM1039 Digital Media: Culture and Identity, FILM2030 Digital Media and the World of Work, and FILM3042 Film, TV, and Digital Media Dissertation – and also teach on FILM6028 Post-Classical Film Theory: Film History and Cinephilia and FILM6029 Research in Film Studies.

I joined the Film Studies department at the University of Southampton in 2024. For the eight years prior to this, I held the position of Senior Lecturer in the School of Film & Media at the University of Lincoln (where I was Programme Leader for the MA Studies in Media and Culture and then later for the MA Media and Communications), and before that taught casually in both the School of Culture and Communication and the School of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Melbourne (wherefrom I also received my PhD) and the Department of Media and Communication at Swinburne University of Technology. In 2016 I was a Junior Research Fellow in the Internationale Kolleg für Kulturtechnikforschung und Medienphilosophie at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.

From 2020-22 I was PI on an AHRC Research Networking Scheme project entitled Pause for Thought: Media Literacy in an Age of Incessant Change, working in collaboration with Dr Scott Wark.

I am a contributing editor for Angelaki: Journal of the Theoretical Humanities. I also currently act as external examiner for the MA Mass Communications degree at Liverpool John Moores University and between 2021-2025 held the same role for the BA Media Communications at Bath Spa University.
